Laboratory of Spectroscopy (UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrophotometers)

Study and characterisation of polymers and polymer composites by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Analysis of phase transitions and process kinetics in the temperature range 0–110°C. Suitable for monitoring photoabsorption in active layers and for the characterisation of polymer-organic photovoltaic cells.

Description of Activities

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of polymer samples (liquid and powder).

Description of the Service

Study and characterisation of polymers and polymer composites. Monitoring of the kinetics of various processes and of absorption in the active layers of photovoltaic devices, and characterisation of polymer-organic photovoltaic cells.

Equipment

Evolution 350 temperature-controlled UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Thermo Scientific

The spectrophotometer is equipped with a double-beam optical system and performs measurements in the spectral range 190-1100 nm. Thanks to precise temperature control in the range from 0 to 110oC, in addition to routine qualitative and quantitative analyses, the instrument enables the detection of phase transitions in smart polymers and polymer materials. The spectrophotometer makes it possible to monitor the kinetics of a number of processes, including the synthesis of new polymers and polymer materials. It is used to measure the absorption/transmission spectra of various liquid systems.

Cary Eclipse temperature-controlled fluorescence spectrophotometer, Agilent

The instrument enables measurements of fluorescence, phosphorescence, chemiluminescence and bioluminescence. It features a pulsed xenon light source, which eliminates the risk of  photodegradation of biologically and chemically sensitive samples. The spectrophotometer provides precise temperature control with an accuracy of ±0.05°C in the range from 0 to 100°C. It is equipped with built-in electromagnetic stirring of samples in solution and with an accessory for the study of solid-state samples (films and powders).

Access to the Laboratory of Spectroscopy

The Laboratory of Spectroscopy is part of the research infrastructure of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” and is located on the Geo Milev campus. Requests for access and for joint research are therefore handled centrally — see Contact. In addition, a full overview of the Centre’s other laboratories is available on the Infrastructure and Laboratories page.

The spectroscopy equipment was set up under project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0006, funded by the Programme “Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation” 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
