Laboratory of Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis
Analysis of the morphology and composition of solid-state and powder samples by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive elemental analysis (EDS). A latest-generation JEOL IT800SHL ultra-high-resolution electron microscope is used, enabling secondary and backscattered electron imaging, elemental mapping, line distribution and spectrum overlay. The laboratory is also equipped with a system for precision sample preparation by ion cutting with argon ions.
Description of the Service
The Laboratory carries out analysis of the surface morphology of solid-state samples (including powders) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive elemental analysis (EDS).
Equipment
JEOL IT800SHL scanning electron microscope
Energy-dispersive detector for elemental analysis
Sample preparation system (ion cutting and polishing)
Latest-generation ultra-high-resolution electron microscope with two in-lens detectors and two in-camera detectors:
– surface morphology – secondary electron imaging
– density distribution – backscattered electron imaging
– elemental analysis – all elements from carbon upwards
– elemental distribution along a line
– elemental mapping – area distribution
– image mixing, spectrum overlay
– energy-dispersive elemental analysis
– sample preparation by precision removal of material with argon ions.

Access to the Laboratory and Service Requests
The Laboratory is part of the research infrastructure of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” and is located on the Geo Milev campus. Requests for access and for joint research are therefore handled centrally — see Contact. In addition, a full overview of the Centre’s other laboratories is available on the Infrastructure and Laboratories page.
The laboratory’s equipment was set up under project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0006, funded by the Programme “Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation” 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
