Acad. Prof. DSc Konstantin Hadjiivanov
Acad. Hadjiivanov is Deputy Chair of the Management Board of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies”. He graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1981. In 1984, following a competitive selection, he was appointed Research Associate at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). In 1990 he defended his doctoral (PhD) thesis, and in 2001 his dissertation for the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences. He was elected Associate Professor in 1996 and Professor in 2002. Since 2005 he has headed one of the two main research areas of the Institute. From 2004 to 2012 he was Director of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of BAS, and between 2017 and 2021 he was Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 2021–2022 he served as Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria. He leads two Centres of Excellence and the National Research Programme Low-Carbon Energy for Transport and Households (E+). He has also led projects funded by the European Commission, NATO, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Egide and Rila programmes, and others. From 2014 to 2019 he was a member of the Natural Sciences panel of the ERC Ideas Programme. Hadjiivanov was elected Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 2012 and Full Member (Academician) in 2021.
Experience
Hadjiivanov has undertaken long-term specialisations at the Institute of Catalysis in Novosibirsk (Russia), Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (France), the University of Caen Normandy in Caen (France) and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany). He has been invited ten times as a visiting professor at various universities. He collaborates with scientists from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Egypt, Italy, India, Spain, the Netherlands, Russia, the USA, Turkey, Romania, Greece, Lithuania and other countries.
Achievements
The research interests of Acad. Hadjiivanov lie in the fields of surface chemistry, spectroscopy and ecology. He is a co-author of more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which have been cited more than 17 000 times by independent authors. His h-index according to the Scopus database is 61. He has supervised seven doctoral students who successfully defended their theses. Hadjiivanov’s most notable distinctions include:
- Award of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria for 2006;
- Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Caen Normandy (France) – 2007;
- Elected Member of the Academia Europaea in 2011;
- “Marin Drinov” Honorary Badge with ribbon – 2018;
- Jiangnan Distinguished Professorship, China – 2019;
- Included in the top 2% of the world's most influential scientists (53rd place in the field of physical chemistry) in the so-called Stanford ranking;
- Recipient of the Pythagoras Award for lifetime contribution to science – 2020
