Acad. Prof. DSc Alexander Dreischuh
Acad. Prof. DSc Alexander Dreischuh is a member of the Management Board of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” as one of the representatives of the Lozenets campus, and a Leading Researcher (R4). He graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1987. In 1991 he defended his PhD thesis in the field of laser physics and nonlinear optics. In 1998 he was elected Associate Professor, and since 2004 he has been Professor of Physics in the Department of Quantum Electronics at the Faculty of Physics. In 2001 he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Physical Sciences. He became a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in 2021 and a Full Member of BAS in 2024. He was Head of the Department of Quantum Electronics from 2004 to 2011 and has held the post again since 2018; in the intervening period (2011–2018) he served two terms as Dean of the Faculty of Physics.
Experience
The research interests of Prof. DSc Alexander Dreischuh lie in the fields of
Nonlinear optics (third-order nonlinear susceptibilities, self-phase modulation and induced phase modulation, four-wave frequency mixing, interference of nonlinear processes, symbiotic laser beams and pulses, all-optical interactions, one- and two-dimensional dark solitons, dark soliton-like waves);
Generation of ultrashort laser pulses (dispersion control, pulse characterisation, adaptive control, above-threshold ionisation, high-order harmonic generation);
Holography (computer-generated holograms, encoding of phase singularities);
Singular linear and nonlinear optics (optical vortices, manipulation of topological charges, nonlinear conversion of structured laser beams, including high-order harmonic generation with them, and photorefractive nonlinear optics, spatial structuring of laser beams, including generation of quasi-non-diffracting Gauss-Bessel beams).
Achievements
He is a co-author of more than 280 scientific publications, including over 90 articles in refereed international journals with an impact factor and over 40 articles in refereed international journals with an impact rank, cited independently more than 2100 times and giving an h-index of 22. SCOPUS Author ID: 7003626585. Web of Science Author ID: R-7620-2016.
Prof. Dreischuh has extensive teaching experience. He has delivered lecture courses in Laser Physics: Fundamentals, Laser Physics: Types of Lasers, Electricity and Magnetism, Optical Waves in Linear and Nonlinear Media, Nonlinear Optical Waves and Solitons, Optical Communication Networks, Fundamentals of Modern Optical Communications, Introduction to the LabView Experiment Control System, Fundamentals of Quantum Electronics (short course) and others. He has supervised more than 30 graduates who successfully defended their diploma theses and four doctoral students who defended their dissertations.
Acad. Prof. DSc Alexander Dreischuh specialised at Graz University of Technology (Austria) and was an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Garching (Germany), where he subsequently made numerous research visits, including as a fellow of the Max Planck Society. He has carried out research projects at the Institute of Optics and Quantum Electronics, Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany), and at the Australian National University in Canberra (Australia). Since 2020 he has been President of the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria.
