Laboratory of Raman Spectroscopy
The Laboratory of Raman Spectroscopy is a research unit that uses Raman spectroscopy to study the structure and composition of substances by analysing the way in which light is scattered when it interacts with them.
Investigation of the molecular structure and chemical composition of organic, inorganic, optical, biological and pharmaceutical solids, liquids and layers
Description of Activities
- Analysis of solid samples
- Analysis of liquid samples
- Analysis of layers
Description of the Service
Raman spectroscopy is an analytical method that probes the vibrations of the bonds between atoms and ions. The spectra obtained carry information about the molecular structure and chemical composition. In solids, Raman spectroscopy provides information on crystal symmetry, defects, stress/strain in the lattice, phase transitions and polymorphism. The materials that can be studied with it include organic, inorganic, optical, biological, pharmaceutical and other materials. Solids, liquids, layers and other samples can be examined. It is a useful method for studying nanomaterials and carbon materials. A significant advantage is its ability to study substances in aqueous solutions. The analysis is non-destructive. It requires no or minimal sample preparation.

Access to the Laboratory of Raman Spectroscopy
The Laboratory of Raman Spectroscopy is part of the research infrastructure of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” and is located at the Geo Milev campus. Requests for access and for joint research are therefore processed centrally — see Contact. In addition, a full overview of the Centre’s other laboratories is available on the Infrastructure and Laboratories page.
The Raman spectroscopy equipment was set up under project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0006, funded by the Programme “Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation” 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
