Laboratory of Remote Observation from Satellites and Unmanned Aerial Systems

The laboratory carries out observation and analysis of satellites and space objects for the purpose of tracking orbital trajectories, remote monitoring and the study of space debris using a high-precision CELESTRON telescope system.

Description of Activities

  • developing remote observation of satellites and unmanned aerial systems
  • investigating the trajectories of operational and decommissioned satellites
  • tracking hazardous space debris

Description of the Service

Tracking and imaging of satellites

Detailed description of the service: The investigation is carried out using a CELESTRON telescope and makes it possible to track and image satellites ranging from those in low Earth orbit to those in geostationary orbit.

Equipment

The optical module for tracking satellite trajectories is the highest-performance alt-azimuth telescope system. It features permanently programmable periodic error correction. It exports high-resolution sky charts. Using pre-loaded orbital parameters, it can calculate in real time the position of the satellite at any given moment and point the telescope to the specified position, so that the satellite can be tracked and imaged. The equipment also allows the tracking and imaging of satellites ranging from those in low Earth orbit to those in geostationary orbit. Fully automated control of the telescope and the imaging camera is possible.

Access to the remote observation laboratory

The remote observation laboratory is part of the research infrastructure of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” and is located on the Lozenets campus. Requests for access and for joint research are therefore processed centrally — see Contacts. In addition, a full overview of the Centre’s other laboratories is available on the page Infrastructure and Laboratories.

The remote observation equipment was established under project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0006, funded by the Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation Programme 2021–2027, co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
