Laboratory of Functional Disperse Systems
The laboratory studies functional colloidal systems and optical sol-gel materials, and develops aerogel composites for energy and insulation applications and micro heat exchangers for efficient thermal systems. It performs luminescence and thermal conductivity measurements on various materials.
Description of Activities
- study of functional colloidal systems with applications in clean technologies,
- development of aerogel composites for clean energy storage, thermal insulation and water purification,
- preparation and properties of sol-gel materials as optical sensors and light sources,
- theoretical physical chemistry as a method for the development of clean technologies.
Description of Services
Emission and excitation spectra of liquids and solids. Detailed description of the service: The analysis is carried out using a PE FL8500 fluorimeter, Perkin Elmer, which enables precise study of the luminescence of various materials and biological systems under excitation with ultraviolet and visible light.
Quantum yield determination

Equipment
C-Therm Technologies thermal conductivity instrument
The thermal analyser is an instrument unique in Bulgaria, with extremely precise electronics, designed for characterising the thermal properties of materials. A thermal chamber for precise temperature control of the objects under study is also available. A special feature of the thermal analyser is a cell for the thermal characterisation of disperse systems – powders, pastes, suspensions, gels and emulsions.
The PE FL8500 fluorimeter, Perkin Elmer, is a modern, highly functional spectral instrument enabling precise study of the luminescence of various materials and biological systems under excitation with ultraviolet and visible light.
Potential areas of application of such equipment are the characterisation of materials for optics and optoelectronics and the fluorescence analysis of pharmaceutical and biological products.

Access to the Laboratory of Functional Disperse Systems
The Laboratory of Functional Disperse Systems is part of the research infrastructure of the National Centre of Excellence “Mechatronics and Clean Technologies” and is located at the Lozenets campus. Requests for access and for joint research are therefore handled centrally — see Contacts. A full overview of the Centre’s other laboratories is also available on the Infrastructure and Laboratories page.
The equipment for functional disperse systems was established under project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0006, funded by the Programme “Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation” 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
